Week beginning 11.1.16

Happy New Year! The first two weeks of the term have gone really well for Year 5. Both Mrs Sandhu and Miss Hanefey have been really impressed with the way the children have settled in with a new teacher. On Tuesday they had a visit from the Mayor of Harpenden. They got to ask questions about his responsibilities in his job.
In Maths the children have been learning about reading and ordering seven digit numbers. We have also looked at what happens to the digits when we multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. The children have worked hard to understand the place value of each digit in the numbers.
In English the children are engaged in reading Oranges in No Man’s Land. Ayesha lives in a battle-scarred building with her granny. Outside, a war is ripping the city apart-but Ayesha doesn’t even know why the two sides are fighting.
It was an exciting day on Wednesday when the children’s author Luke Temple came to visit. The Year 5s really enjoyed the way Luke brought his books alive through drama and video clips and some of them were brave enough to volunteer to participate!
