Thursday 20th October 2016

It has been lovely to meet you all this week at the Parents evenings and I hope the email we have sent has given you some useful links.

Here are a few photos of the fantastic day, when the children took part in Zulu dancing workshops last week. Thank you for your generous donations in supporting us to run such a valuable day.

After a very busy half term, the children most definitely deserve a rest over the next week! The class have worked hard to write their own personal stories, after reading and discussing 'Christophe's story' in depth. In story writing they have been writing different parts of a story each day, based on some detailed planning they have completed. This has been hard work but very enjoyable to learn about their different experiences. They have tried hard to include a range of connectives, sentence openers and interesting vocabulary. Hopefully you were able to read and enjoy their stories in their English books!

In Maths this week, the children have had to think carefully when problem solving. It is vital they can explain to us how they got to the answer and give good reasoning, using mathematical vocabulary.

In RE over the past week the children have learned about the Festival of Passover or Pesach. They wrote fantastic summaries of the Exodus, showing great understanding of the story. They have also experienced some food from a Seder plate and they wrote in detail about each part and what it represents. We were lucky enough, too, to taste some of Jack's unleavened (flat) bread and thoroughly enjoyed it!

This week we have sent home a reading comprehension for homework and hope the children will record their reading in their reading records. Please also continue to encourage your children to practise their timetables.

We look forward to the second half of the term!

Friday 7th October 2016

What a fantastic celebration we had for Harvest this morning in our class assembly. The children sang beautifully and taught the rest of the school about the history of Harvest. They did a brilliant job packing up Captain Kenneth's car with lots of items which had been donated by members of the school. Thank you so much for all of your donations !!!

Today the children worked hard in English to write sentences using apostrophes to show possession. We have been linking our sentence level work with Christophe's story, a story about a boy and his family who left war-torn Rwanda. The children have been gripped by the story and will be writing their own stories in the coming weeks.

In Maths this week we have been revising time and solving times problems using time lines, as well as learning about the perimeter of shapes. Next week the children will be practising mental addition and subtraction calculations and they will be using multiplication and division written methods to solve problems.

We look forward to seeing you at the Parent Consultation evenings in two weeks time!
Have a lovely weekend.

Space Centre, 4th October 2016

On Tuesday year 5 visited the Space Centre in Leicester. It was a busy day but very enjoyable.

Our first stop was a workshop about the Earth, Sun and Moon. The leader was very impressed with the children's scientific knowledge. The children visited the planetarium show which gave them a realistic insight into the conditions in space and the preparation needed by an astronaut.

The final stop was the various stations which were informative and interactive.

The highlight for many was the simulator ride. We hope you enjoy some photos from the day!
